About the waterproof IP rating of smartphones
Manufacturers of phones, smartwatches, and other devices will tell you that your device is waterproof. But the actual water resistance of Apple, Sony and Samsung is different. The word “IP rating” is often used to refer to a phone or device that is exposed to water or moisture. It is an international standard that sets the level of protection against dust and solids.
Phone X, iPhone 8, Samsung Galaxy S8, Sony Xperia XZ1, Apple Watch 3 are all waterproof. However, not all of them have the same IP rating. The Samsung Galaxy S8, Note 8, and Sony Xperia XZ Premium have IP68, while the iPhone X and iPhone 8 have IP67. The word “IP” stands for “ingress protection“. This means measuring how easily dust and water can easily get inside your device. The IP is the same, and only the following numbers determine how resistant the phone is. The last two digits of the letter P (for example, IP 67) indicate that the front one protects against dust (for example, sand and dust on the beach). Its numbers can be 5 or 6.
